Pope arrives in Damascus
Pope John Paul II arrived in Damascus today afternoon in a visit to Syria which will last for four days. He was welcomed at the Damascus airport by President Bashar al-Assad, Syrian state officials and men of religion representing all Syrian religious communities.

One of the main stops in the visit of the Pope is a visit to the Umayyad's mosque which is rich in religious symbols, as it contains the tomb of John the Baptist ( Prophet Yahya for Muslims).
