Morocco called on Tuesday for the lifting of the embargo enforced against Libya since 1992, after the north African country transferred two Libyan suspects in the Lockerbie affair to the Netherlands for trial. "We believe that the next stage should be the lifting of the embargo," said Khalid Alioua, spokesman of the government, following a cabinet meeting. Go

Spokesman for the United Nations secretary general, Fred Eckhard, said yesterday that the UN Security Council had agreed to extend the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) for another six months, until October 6. Go

An Israeli plane arrived in Macedonia on Tuesday carrying humanitarian aid for refugees in Kosovo. Israel Radio said that four Israeli planes would land later in the day in Macedonia carrying a field hospital together with a team of doctors, nurses and security personnel. Go

Jordanian Water Minister Kamel Haddadin has announced a tangible detente on the water issue with Israel through contacts which have been made by the two sides. In a statement issued Tuesday by the Jordanian daily al-Rai, the Jordanian minister added that meetings are continuous with the Israelis in the joint committee for waters and that the Israelis asserted their commitment to the provisions mentioned in the Wadi Araba agreement. Well-informed sources at the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russian Foreign Minister Igor lvanov is expected to hold a tour of the Middle East, but the date for such a visit has not been fixed yet. The sources added that the objective of the tour is to give a new impetus to reviving the Middle East peace process. As a result Ivanov will visit Syria, Lebanon and Israel. Go

A round of cultural talks was held on Tuesday in Cairo between Egyptian Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni and his Kuwaiti counterpart, Youssef al-Sammit. Talks dealt with means of supporting cooperation between the two states in various cultural fields. Go
