Britain may ask big compensation for Lockerbie victims

Originally published

Britain said on Tuesday that it may ask Libya for large financial compensation if it would proven that the two Libyans suspected of being involved in the Lockerbie incident are found guilty.

A spokesman for the British Foreign Ministry said that British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook indicated the possibility of charging Libya to pay US $800 million if the two Libyans are convicted at the end of their trials which will take place in the Hague, Holland.

These statements were made just one day after the two suspected Libyans arrived in Holland in line with an agreement with the UN, which was immediately followed by a decision taken by the UN to suspend the sanctions imposed on Libya for eight years.

The spokesman added that Cook asserted that the trial will not be political, rather criminal, aiming at learning the heart of the matter in the Lockerbie incident.
