Building collapses killing 27 in Fez

Originally published

A five-storey building collapsed early Wednesday morning in the popular Ben Debbab district of Fez killing 27.

Local authorities confirmed the figure, adding 3 victims in critical condition were forwarded to the Meknes military hospital while 35 other injured were admitted in Fez hospitals.

Casualties might increase because the building, built in the late 70's in total ignorance of construction standards, housed a total of 87 people. 35 people might still be buried under the rubble, rescue endeavours being limited to the use of axes and other small tools and equipment because narrow streets bar access to large excavation engines.

Early this Thursday morning, rescue teams managed to unearth alive a two-month old baby and two adult survivors. The baby's mother is reported to be alive and should be reached shortly.

The authorities are monitoring rescue and relief operations and the supply to victims of medical care, housing, food and other necessities.
