Gaddafi arrives in Sudan today

Originally published

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said in a press conference he held in Khartoum on Wednesday that Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi will arrive in Sudan today for a several-day visit. This is his first visit to Sudan since 7 years.

Ismael described this visit as "historic." He added that this visit comes following Gaddafi's victory in the face of conspiracies aimed at isolating and besieging him," manifested in suspending the embargo imposed on Libya since April 1992, noting that the embargo was lifted after Tripoli handed over the two Libyans suspected of being involved in the Lockerbie incident in 1988, which resulted in killing 270 persons.

The Sudanese minister praised "the efforts exerted by Libya to restore stability and peace to Sudan and Africa."

Ismael's statements in this respect were in reference to the mediation efforts made by Tripoli between Khartoum and the Sudanese opposition.

Official sources said that there are attempts to gain Sudan's consent that Libya hosts the meetings of national reconciliation discussions in coming month.
