Sudanese forces crush rebels

Originally published

Spokesman for the Sudanese armed forces, Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman Serr al-Khatem, has announced that Sudan realized great victories against southern rebel forces, saying that Ugandan troops backing the rebels had suffered heavy casualties.

Commenting on the three-month cease fire decision announced by the rebel forces, the Sudanese military spokesman said the decision is harmful to the military position of Sudan because the opposition, following their defeat, would try to unify their ranks.

He cited two reasons why the opposition would unify their ranks. The first reason is military, and the second is the attempt made by the rebels to have control of the relief aid dispatched to the people of southern Sudan, who suffer starvation because of drought and war.
