The Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am said on Wednesday that the Sudanese forces inflicted heavy losses on Ugandan troops this week. The paper quoted Sudanese Army spokesman Abdul Rahman Serr al-Khatem as saying, "The Sudanese army repelled an attack by the Ugandan forces."

He added that the Sudanese armed forces on Monday waged a fierce battle in Sharq al-Istewaa province, 50 km northeast of Juba, the main city in southern Sudan. He said heavy losses were inflicted on the attacking Ugandan troops in the battle, which lasted for hours. Al-Khatem said two Sudanese army officers were killed and several soldiers were wounded.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese daily Alwan (colors) quoted the Sudanese minister of agriculture and natural resources, Nafe' Ali Nafe', as saying that Sudanese forces killed 50 rebels in a battle in al-Nouba northern mountain.

Nafe' added that, "Sudanese forces repelled an attack against Mpndi in the South Kordofan province carried out by 500 rebels."
