"La Francophone" unanimously elected former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Ghali as new leader of the group, giving him a mandate to deepen the group's political and economic involvement in world affairs.

At the end of three-day summit of the Francophone group's 49 member states, an agreement was reached to focus on specific areas like conflict prevention in member nations. The group also vowed to cooperate with the international community to guarantee human rights.

"Given the current problems in a certain number of member countries in the heart of the African continent….we demand the programs and mechanisms to prevent conflict and maintain peace continue and be increased in coordination with international, regional and national organizations," said the plan of action, which gave Ghali the mandate to develop various initiatives to help resolve conflicts, Al Ahrar daily said today.
