Syrian wheat is internationally competitive
Syrian wheat managed to enjoy a good position at the world trade market facing a strong competition by the American, Australian and Canadian wheat. Wheat production in Syria surpassed by two fold consumption which led to a strategic surplus for export.
Funds of the General Establishment for Cereals Trade and Industry amounted this year to $ 195,738 in return for exporting 1,042 million tons of cereals.
Syria achieved food security and started exporting wheat in 1994 as a result of the agricultural policy following the Correctionist Movement, which based on self-reliance in achieving food security, ensuring the peasants' stability and supporting the national economy.
Syria also issued the law of the agrarian reform, established the peasants union, the Agronomists Association and farmers chamber of commerce in addition to scientific research centers.
The planted areas were expanded in 1994 to 1,553 hectars that produced 3,703 tons. That year, Syria achieved self-sufficiency and stopped importing wheat.
