A report by the Syrian Arab News Agency on Sunday said that the electricity sector in Syria has developed during the last decade in a big way due to its role in the process of development and the persisting need for its growth in all domains.

The high electricity load has reached to 1928 Megawatt during 1990 while it reached 4128 Megawatt in 2002 with an annual development estimated at 7,9 percent while electricity consumption in 1990 have been 10664 million KWPH and jumped to 23465 million KWPH in 2000 therefore the annual development average on energy demand during last years arrived at about 8,2 percent, the report said.

To deal with the increasing demand on electricity and avoid energy weakness that appeared in 1993, the ministry of electricity has worked to deal with the situation by building new power plants in all governorates.

In 1990 the whole energy production reached 11475 million KWPH in 1990 and bounced up to reach 25217 million KWPH at the end of 2000.

The General Institution For Electricity is working to build various projects as to meet demand on energy and guarantee the economic growth need by implementing plans of agriculture and economic development taking into consideration the increase in demand due to the similar increase in population, it said.

Energy grid project among Syria, Egypt, Iraq Jordan and Turkey in 1992 was one of the means Syria has resorted to as a way to bolster this important sector for development. The first phase has been accomplished in 1998 between Egypt and Jordan to be followed with a grid between Syria and Turkey in early 2001. This is besides another bilateral energy grid project between Syria and Lebanon in 1997.
