The Moroccan football players, Noureddine Naybet (Deportivo la Corogne/Esp) and Jaouad Zairi (Sochaux/Fra), were nominated along with 21 other African players for the title of best African player 2003.

The three top players of 2002, Senegalese El Hadji Diouf and Pape Bouba Diop and Egyptian Ahmed Hassan do not appear on this year's list.
