Originally published

The international commission on narcotics control on Wednesday announced that all Arab states have become members at the three UN basic agreements to fighting drug and Israel is still the only country in the Middle East which has not joined any of these agreements.

The commission's annual report said:" the commission urges Israel, the only country in West Asia which has not yet become a source at the UN agreement to fight illegitimate drug trafficking for 1988, to join the said agreement." In a press conference held in Cairo to debate the report, the advisor of the regional bureau for the UN program to fighting drug Abbas Mansour said that by Kuwait's recent joining to this agreement all Arab states have become signatories for the three agreements for 1961, 1972 and 1988. Mansour added that Israel and Turkey witnessed wide spread use "Ecstasy" drug which appeared in Europe four years ago and reached the Middle East in 2000.

The advisor did not mention the amounts of drug inspected in the two countries but he attributed that to the increase in the spread of using the internet and misuse of criminal gangs.

The drug control commission, which has Vienna as a headquarters expressed concern over the increase of drug use in Morocco and its being a " cross -road" for drugs going to Latin America and to Europe.
