Arab League opposes military action against any Arab state

Originally published

Secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, said on Tuesday he is against any military action against an Arab state, arguing that dialogue is the best means to settle all disputes.

Moussa who was meeting the press at the National Press Club in Washington said, referring to US president George W. Bush's remarks on the "Axis of evil," "for Arabs evil is Israeli occupation of Arab territories and its repression against the Palestinian people."

The Arab league chief also brushed aside pre-conceived ideas circulated about Arabs following last September's attacks against the USA, saying Arabs do not harbor hatred towards the USA. All the League member-states had condemned these attacks and have been committed for years in the fight against terrorism, he said.

He also called the US administration to play a more active and fairer role for the resumption of dialogue and the restoration of the Palestinian people's rights. Israeli premier, Ariel Sharon, should understand that he cannot impose his own vision and choice on the Palestinian people, he insisted before underscoring that Arab countries will renew their support to the Palestinian cause in their summit next March.

Meanwhile, he praised the European Union for its attitude towards the Palestinian issue and the financial support it extends to several infrastructure projects in the Palestinian territories.

The Arab League secretary general was in the USA to attend the world economic forum of Davos held in New York.
