Improving mechanisms of peacekeeping strengthens its operations
The UN General Assembly began its annual revision of peacekeeping operations undertaken by the world organization in various countries.
A special committee made up of both representatives of countries participating in peacekeeping operations and members of the Security Council is now conducting a comprehensive assessment of peacekeeping activities and the role of the UN secretariat in backing up those operations.
Egypt's chief delegate to the UN ambassador Ahmed Abu EL Gheit said that Egypt's delegation to the committee expounded its viewpoint regarding the role the administrative apparatus of the UN should play to back up and guide peacekeeping operations.
He said that an overall revision of the situation on the ground would surely raise the efficiency of the UN troops pointing out that the revision was necessary to address issues such as the slow UN response to cases that need a quick presence of peacekeepers in the field.
The Egyptian diplomat added that a revision was also imperative to strengthen the level of coordination between various UN sectors involved in peacekeeping operations.
He underlined the importance of consultations between members of the Security Council and countries providing peacekeepers before making decisions or modifying the role of the peacekeepers.
