Government renews commitment for honest elections

Originally published

The Moroccan government on Tuesday renewed commitment to hold honest and transparent elections for the renewal of one third of the Moroccan upper house, the Chamber of Advisors.

The government also called for struggling against the use of money to buy votes in the elections, Moroccan culture and communication minister, Mohamed Achaari, told the press.

Morocco will hold on Friday elections to renew one third of the Chamber of Advisors. 90 seats are available for candidates, belonging to three types of electorate bodies: local councils, professional chambers and trade unions.

Under the Moroccan Constitution, one third of the members of upper house is renewed every three years. The one third to be renewed is determined by drawing of lots. The chamber's term is nine years.

The competent authorities, political parties and the organizations participating in the poll should join together in the fight against the use of money in these elections, Achaari said.
