Moroccan leftist party calls for suppression of upper parliamentary chamber

Originally published

The central committee of Moroccan leftist party "OADP" said the parliament upper chamber should be suppressed in the interest of Morocco.

In a statement released at the end of its 2nd ordinary session, the party said the institution is a burden on the state and an impediment both to legislative and to executive action.

The OADP, which is not represented in the Leftist-led coalition government but which is supporting it, renewed its call for a government stemming from free and transparent elections and enjoying prerogatives and means to carry out its program. The party also draws attention to the deteriorating social situation, the wasting of public funds, various forms of corrupt practices and lack of resolve to address these problems.

The party also deplored the return to old methods of freedom restrictions and repression of protest movements.

Regarding the Koutla (a coalition of former opposition parties to which the OADP is member), the OADP central committee criticized it for not opening a debate on preparations for the coming elections and for failing to respect its commitments.
