OIC economic, cultural and social affairs commission convenes
The 23d session of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Economic, Sultural and Social Commission opened Saturday in Jeddah.
OIC secretary general Azzedine Laraki urged Islamic countries to take on challenges of globalization and international competition, saying the session's recommendations will be discussed at the 27th summit of the OIC foreign affairs ministers.
The five-day session probes Islamic countries' economies and the repercussions of regional and international economic groupings. The agenda also includes economic problems facing Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese in occupied Arab territories, economic assistance to some Moslem countries and ways to alleviate the impact of economic sanctions on Libya.
The commission also looks into environment issues in the Islamic world, the role of technology in economic and social development and women's roles in the Moslem society.
