Netanyahu aide indicates efforts to revive Syrian - Israeli track
Syria-Israel, Politics, 11/26/1998

A prominent aide for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday noted that efforts are being exerted to revive the suspended peace talks with Syria, adding that, "Israel may accept a middle solution concerning the Golan Heights."

In a statement he made in London prior to the arrival of Netanyahu, David Bar Ilan said that talks relating to the final status of the Palestinian territories will take a longer time, despite the demands made by the Palestinians to reach an agreement by May, 1999.

Bar Ilan spoke of efforts on the "screens" to break the stalemate with Damascus, noting that Washington wants to revive Israeli - Syrian talks after an agreement was reached last month at the Wye River Plantation with the Palestinians.

Bar Ilan was asked whether there is a change in Netanyahu's position concerning the Golan and he said, "Such a change is probable. When you say you are ready to negotiate on everything including the Golan, it is not possible to ignore the possibility of reaching a middle solution. I mean a middle solution concerning territories."
