Syria, Politics, 2/16/2006
The Syrian authorities released former Syrian opposition parliamentarian Riad Seif juts hours after his detention, while the second parliamentarian Ma'moun al-Homsi is still unseen.
Informed sources in Damascus said the interim detention for both Seif and al-Homsi came over "statements that violate limits" and "contacting the outside," adding that the aim behind their detention is to let them know "their own limits."
The Syrian security forces took Seif from his house at 4.30 a.m. at dawn Wednesday and released him almost 11 a.m. Wednesday, while al-Homsi was detained on Tuesday from his house for hours before he was released and he was requested again for interrogation before he disappeared.
Homsi was also arrested for several hours on Tuesday before he was released.
Syrian lawyer and human rights activist Anwar al-Bunni said that the security forces pressured Seif in order to stop his political activity.
Meantime, the Syrian authorities released the political activist Muhammad Najati Tayyara also hours after his detention.
