Syrian intellectuals call on the Baath congress to revive 'Damascus spring'

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Syrian intellectuals called on the ruling Baath Arab socialist party which convenes its 10th regional congress for releasing all political detainees in Syria and to bring back life to what they called the "Spring of Damascus".
The intellectuals stressed in their statement addressed to the conference releasing all political detainees in jails and disclosing facts about missing people.
The statement, in particular, called for the release of the "Damascus spring" detainees who were arrested in 2001. They are the two parliamentarians Riad Seif and Mamoun al-Homsi, the economist Aref Dalila, lawyer Habib Issa, Walid al-Bunni and Fawaz Tello.
They also called for the release of two human rights activists detained in recent weeks. They are lawyer Muhammad Radoun and writer Ali al- Abdullah.
Among signatories of the statement are lawyers and human rights activists including Anwar al-Bunni, Khalil Matoukl and well known intellectuals including Michael Kilo and Sadeq Jalal al-Azem.
