A committee in defense of freedoms established in Syria
Syria, Politics, 1/19/2005

4 opposition Syria parties and associations announced in a statement following a two- day meetings in Damascus the formation of a national coordination committee in defense of basic rights and human rights in Syria.

The secretary of the Kurdish Progressive Democratic party Aziz Dawoud said that these political parties met on Monday and Tuesday in Damascus and formed a committee called the "national coordination in defense of basic freedoms and human rights in Syria."

Syria had witnessed acts of riots because of a row that took place following a soccer match on mach 12, 2004 between fans of various sport groups of Arabs and Kurds.

Similar acts of riots erupted later from the northern Syrian city of al-Qamishli near the borders with Turkey and Iraq to the other Syrian cities. Several persons were detained then following confrontations between the demonstrators and the army forces and then the government released the detained persons.

Worthy mentioning that some 2 million Kurds are living in Syria out of the population estimated at 19 million.

The great support given to the Kurds in Iraq from the USA stimulated the feelings of Kurds in Syria in directing them to play a greater political role under the current American pressures against Syria.
