Egypt's Muslim Brothers announce readiness to be converted into a civilian party
Egypt, Politics, 1/21/2004

Member of the Guidance ( Irshad ) office of the Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brothers) group, Abdul Menem Abu al-Fotouh, said that the group wants to convert inself into a legitimate declared political party that practice its activities in the open.

He said that if the law says that the Muslim brothers is illegal, the constitution does not say so. "the current Egyptian constitution, without any amendment gives us the right to declare a political party in the name of the Muslim Brothers party because it does not prevent the foundations of a religious party." In a statement, Abu al-Fotouh said that the Muslim Brothers do not want to be a sectarian party, and they do not oppose their party to include Copts as long as they accept the program of the Muslim Brothers."

He stressed that the leaders of the group have since years announced openly that the group want to have its own political party, and this was declared by both the two former Murshid, Mamoun al-Huseibi and Mustafa Mashour, and all Muslim Brothers figures. This is our attitude. We want to be a legal group within a constitutional framework and this can be only attained in a party. "
