Mahdi Akef elected as a Murshid for Muslim brothers in Egypt
The Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brothers) group in Egypt elected Muhammad Mahdi Akef as a general Murshid (guide) for the group in succession of the Mamoun al-Hudeibi who died last Thursday.
The noted member in the Muslim brothers group, Issam al-Aryan, said that Akef took his oath yesterday.
Al-Aryan added that the guidance office of the group elected Akef ( 76 year old) before a while, while an opinion poll among the group's organizations abroad was ongoing before announcing this news.
Muslim brothers leading figures held an urgent meeting before al-Hudeibi's funeral in which they decided to choose lawyer Muhammad Hilal, the oldest member to act on behalf of the general Murshid until a new leader is elected within two months.
Worthy mentioning that the Muslim Brothers are the largest opposition groups in the Egyptian parliament.
