Al-Assad confers with Chinese envoy

Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad yesterday received a letter from the Chinese President Jiang Zemin. The letter was handed to President al-Assad by the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister, Yang Win Chang, during his meeting with al-Assad in the presence of Foreign Minister Farouk Al-Shara and the Chinese Ambassador in Damascus.

The letter is connected with the traditional relations of friendship and coordination on the international level between the two countries, Syria and China.

The letter included an invitation for President Bashar Al-Assad to visit China. The President promised to visit China at a convenient time.

During the meeting, al-Assad praised China's stance regarding Middle East anf Asia issues at the Security Council as a permanent member. He hoped China to be more active in conducting her external role.

For his part, Chang pointed out that China expresses gratitude for Syria's stance regarding unified China and the efforts being exerted by Syria to unify China peacefully.

The Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister indicated that China is proud of having a friend like Syria, praising the important role Syria played at the Security Council till the resolution 1441 was issued, which prevents the automatic use of force.

Regarding the Middle East cause, Chang said that the basic reason for escalating tension and confrontations between the Palestinians and Israelis is due to the Israeli government's intransigence and her rejection of implementing the Security Council resolutions as well as her rejection of the principle of "land for peace."
