Originally published

The Moroccan Human Rights Association (AMDH) expressed its intention to continue its struggle, together with other human rights bodies, to fulfill all its claims and defend human dignity.

In a statement released on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the universal human rights declaration, the association noted an increasing awareness of human rights among Moroccans, upsurge of social struggles and recognition of the citizens' right to peacefully demonstrate.

The association cites as positive events, the return to Morocco of Abraham Serfaty, an exiled opponent, and of the family of Benbarka, who was reported missing in Paris in 1965, in addition to the state acknowledgement of the existence of missing persons and of arbitrary detention practices.

However, the association which notes the existence of some negative aspects in the human rights situation in Morocco, criticized as "deplorable" the situation of social rights, as regards the living standard, collective and individual firing of employees and high unemployment rates, in addition to the state's inactivity to end the illegal emigration and the use of death boats.
