Large funeral ceremony for Hachani

Originally published

A funeral was held on Tuesday for a leader in the banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) in Algeria, Abdelkader Hachani, who was assassinated on Monday by bullets fired by unidentified persons in a dental clinic in Algiers.

The funeral proceeded amid strong security measures.

Meanwhile, the leader of the FIS, Abassi Madani stressed his commitment to civil peace in his country. He said, "The Algerian people have said their own word. We will keep our promise. They sought to assassinate Algeria. But Algeria will survive."

Former chairman of the National Council (parliament), Abdelaziz Boukhamkhem, and the chairman of the National Reform Movement (al-Islah al-Watani), Abdullah Jabullah, expressed their hope that Hachani will be the last victim.

Meantime, the official news agency said "The assassination of Abdelkader Hachani continued Tuesday to raise reactions of indignation within the political community and national organizations, which all denounced an attempt to block the process of civil harmony and the restoration of peace and security.

The National Party for Solidarity and Development (PNSD) "denounced with force, in an official statement, the terrorist assassination of late Abdelkader Hachani."

This assassination, the PNSD noted, aims "at ensuring the effects of a strong media coverage to thwart the relevant and persevering efforts of men and women of goodwill, animated by their nationalism and their patriotism, in order to give to the rising generations a chance to live in a peaceful Algeria, and regarding as sacred the first of the rights, the right to live."

The Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) condemned the assassination of Abdelkader Hachani and, in a solemn call, invited all Algerians, "to remain vigilant in this particularly delicate phase to prevent or limit terrorist acts and to mobilise themselves so that the political change awaited by the people remains our country's priority."

The Democracy and Youth Movement (MJD) condemned "the coward assassination of Hachani by cruel hands that are against the success of civil harmony, and demand that justice be done."

The National Movement for Nature and Development (MNND) announced its "sadness" and "indignation."

"This wretched crime," the MNND underlined, "aims at destabilising Algeria and at attacking civil harmony, national reconciliation and peace, to which late Hachani always called for."

The Democratic National Party (PND) condemned vigorously this "coward assassination" and reiterated his support for the president's engagement for national unity and civil peace.

As concerns the associative movement and national organizations, the national observatory of humans right (ONDH) condemned this "wretched act which targeted a personality who intended to contribute to the restoration of peace and national reconciliation."

The national organization of children of martyrs (ONEC) invited the citizens to display vigilance and to mobilise themselves in order to "face these artificial obstacles and its attempts to bring Algeria in a dead end and prevent the achievement of peace, civil harmony and revival."
