Syria permits entry of Jordanian press

Originally published

Jordanian officials announced in Amman on Tuesday that Syria has permitted Jordanian papers to enter its territories after a five year boycott due to the political tension following the Wadi Araba agreement signed between Jordan and Israel.

The director general of the press and publication department at the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Abdullah Attoum, said on Tuesday that Syria had informed the Jordanian ambassador in Damascus, Nasouh al-Majali, on Monday of its consent to permit the six Jordanian dailies and the 20 weeklies to enter the Syrian territories.

He added that this Syrian measure reveals the strong relations linking the two peoples and countries.

Attoum added that the Syrian press has been circulated in Jordan without any cessation or suspension despite the political tensions that resulted from Jordan's signing of a separate agreement with Israel in 1994.

It is expected, however, that the Jordanian press will start to be circulated in the Syrian markets as of the end of this week.
