Russian president meets with Barak

Originally published

President Boris Yeltsin of Russia has expressed his conviction that as the new government in Israel has a desire for peace, it makes the realization of peace in the Middle East region possible.

Following his Monday meeting with the Russian president, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said the Russian role in the Middle East would contribute to give the Middle East peace process a push forward.

Israel Radio said that Barak had also met with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and that he will meet later on with the Russian prime minster.

Meanwhile, Yeltsin signalled Moscow's desire for a more active role in two key international trouble-spots, the Middle East and the Balkans, according to Reuters.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli premier arrived in Moscow on a 24-hour visit, during which he will discuss with the Russian officials the Middle East peace process.
