A plenary meeting on cooperation between the Arab League's specialized institutions and organizations and the United Nations' specialized agencies will be held in Vienna on July 8 and 9.

The AL delegation to the meeting is presided over by the AL's assistant secretary general for political affairs, Muhammad Zakarya Ismael, while the UN side will be headed by the chairman of the political department at the UN.

Ismael said the meeting will discuss three main topics, mainly on political, economic and social aspects of concern to the two sides.

Ismael added that concentration will be made on the political side, also on three main points. The first is the Middle East peace process, security and stability, and means of strengthening cooperation between the two sides to avoid international conflicts and ways of strengthening peace and security in the region.

Stress will also be laid on the question of landmines, from which several states in the region are suffering. In this respect, the AL seeks to find ways to eliminate this problem, from which poor countries also suffer.

Ismael elaborated that the third issue to be debated is the question of the small weapons and means of limiting trading in them, as this is one of the main sources for financing international organized crime.
