Spain hosts Kurdish parliament

Originally published

The speaker of the regional parliament for the Basque district in Northern Spain, Juan Maria Atotska, on Sunday reiterated that his parliament will host in July the Kurdish Parliament in exile, despite the opposition of the Spanish government which fears the eruption of a crisis with Turkey.

In an interview published by the Spanish daily al-Bayes on Sunday, Atotska said the parliament enjoys sovereignty to host whoever it wants and will not ask the permission of anyone about that.

Atotska added, "We had taken our decision to host the Kurdish parliament because we think of giving a more humanitarian touch on the history of an oppressed people, a history that reminds us of what we had witnessed during the war," in reference to the repressive acts of the Spanish dictator Franco against the Basque district following the Spanish civil war in 1936 - 1939.
