Report: Britain planned to topple governments in Jordan, Saudi Arabia in 1967

Originally published

The London-based Middle East daily said on Monday that records of the British Foreign Office for 1967 unveiled a detailed plan to topple the governments in Jordan and Saudi Arabia which was known among Arab and Western officials and diplomats in Riyadh, Baghdad and London by the name of the "Ramadan Plan."

The paper added that the documents, which were opened to the public after the passage of 30 years as stated by British law, did not disclose the fate of the plan.

The plan, which falls in five translated documents, calls for moves of Egyptian - Iraqi troops toward Jordan to topple the government there during January 1967, at a time when Syrian troops would move to counter the Saudi forces and topple the government there.

The paper indicated that it is clear from the correspondences between the British ambassadors in Baghdad, Riyadh, and Tehran which were included in the file that the plan is considered forged. One diplomat believed that Israel created the whole story.
