Sudanese opposition calls for parliamentary elections with international supervision
Dailies published on Tuesday in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, stated that the Sudanese opposition will deliver to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir a memorandum calling for parliamentary elections under international supervision.
The Sudanese dailies reported that a delegation representing the opposition parties led by Abeel Aley will deliver the memorandum of demands which includes abrogation of the "only ruling party" and forming a provisional government to organize elections with international supervision.
The memorandum which was signed by the Democratic National Alliance, which comprises the northern and southern opposition, held al-Bashir's government responsible for the starvation in the southern parts of the country and the continued civil war since 1983 between the north, where the majority of people are Muslims, and the south with its Christian majority.
A statement by the opposition also called on the United Nations Security Council, specialized organizations affiliated to the UN, regional organizations, Sudan's neighboring countries and members of the international community, especially those concerned with Sudanese affairs, to stand by the Sudanese people's fair demands.
The Sudanese authorities dissolved political parties in Sudan following the 1989 coup which brought al-Bashir to power.
