Sudanese official links reconciliation with opposition to acceptance of constitution
A Sudanese official has downplayed the possibility of the success of any Egyptian initiative to achieve reconciliation between the Sudanese government and the northern opposition.
He explained this in that Egypt gives shelter to opposition leaders, a matter which undermines confidence in any solutions proposed by Egypt to settle the problem.
The secretary of communication at the national congress, the ruling political party in Sudan, Muhammad Adam Amin, asserted that "Egypt's position in support of the unity of the Sudanese territories is based on the fact that it will have much easier relations with one unified position rather than with many states in case a partition takes place in Sudan."
He added that Egypt has interests in water-sharing with Sudan and that Sudan is "serious in achieving the Egyptian interests."
He linked the success of any initiative to the approval of the Sudanese opposition and its recognition of the constitution.
He spoke of the attitude pursued by the "National Congress" party to sever links with the government and return state owned cars. He added that the province's conferences will be held following Eid al-Fitr.
