UN Security Council extends UNDOF in the Golan
The UN Security Council on Wednesday extended its mandate for the UNDOF in the Golan for another six months. UN resolution no. 1211, which provides for extending for UNDOF in the Golan until May 31, 1999 at a strength of 1,050 men, was unanimously approved.
UNDOF was established in 1974 to observe the maintenance of the cease-fire decision in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, in which Israel has already established huge settlements projects.
On this occasion, current UN Security Council chairman Peter Burliegh, who is also the US deputy representative at the UN, read a short traditional statement calling for "comprehensive settlement which covers all aspects of the Middle East problem."
