Arab transport ministers 14th session

Originally published

The Iraqi transport minister Ahmad Murtada Ahmad has called in the inaugural session of the Arab transport ministers held in Cairo to resume air flights to Iraq.

He added this decision does not contradict with the UN Security Council. He indicated the consequences of the destructive sanctions which have been imposed on Iraq since eight years and resulted in killing of millions. The Iraqi minister said "despite the fact that Iraq responded positively to the UN Security Council resolutions at the time when UNSCOM and its chairman inspected every corner in Iraq including schools, all these cooperation measures by the Iraqis were futile and in vain."

In the second close-door session for the Arab transport ministers, discussions centered on the agenda which contains 24 items. But the Iraqi request was neglected. Item 23 of the agenda was selected as the opening article for debate. It pertained to electing members of the council's executive bureau. Following 45 minutes of contacts and consultations, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, and Jordan, won the bureau's membership, whereas Syria and Libya which were members in the previous bureau failed to win seats in the news one. They were replaced by Morocco and Jordan.
