Originally published

The UN World Food Program said on Thursday that tens of thousands of southern Sudan residents who have been trying to battle against starvation are now fighting heavy rainfall and floods.

The spokeswoman for the program in Nairobi said that seasonal rainfall came very late in certain areas and thereby constitutes another problem for the populace.

Ajib district in Bahr al-Gazelle province is among the most vulnerable because of these floods.

At the peak of the starvation which hit the country in July, thousands of people came a to food-serving center in Ajib. Some 46,000 of them were left homeless.

The spokeswoman added: "Those people are very weak. They are vulnerable." She said that floods made use of the airport impossible within the last three or four weeks, which is made it difficult to transfer food supplies."
