Libyan and other initiatives for Sudanese reconciliation

Originally published

Egypt and Libya are communicating with Sudan concerning a peaceful solution to the Sudanese struggle for power.

Tripoli invited Mohammed Othman El-Merghany, the chairman of the Democratic Unity party for a visit and to meet Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.

Amr Moussa, the Egyptian foreign minister, had a telephone conversation with El-Merghany. This new initiative with El-Merghany follows previous contacts with the prime minister and the chairman of the state council will pave the way for Egypt and Libya to try to achieve Sudanese reconcilation.

Gaddafi received Ghazi Salaedine, the secretary-general of the national conference for political order, who is currently visiting Libya, and they discussed relations between the two countries.

In a other development in the Sudanese crisis, Hassan El-Tourabi, the chairman of the Sudanese parliament, called on Sadiq El-Mahdi, the previous Sudanese prime minister and opposition leader, to return to Sudan and participate in setting the constitution.

El-Tourabi said he does not mind meeting El- Mahdi to discuss the constitution and other matters. El-Tourabi did not rule out a limited initiative on the part of the Sudanese government concerning reconciliation with the opposition.
