The Kuwaiti General Authority for the Fishing Resources (KGAFR) apprehended 13 non-Kuwaiti ships while fishing for shrimp in the territorial waters of Kuwait during 1997.

The director of the KGAFR, Khaled Al Mubarak, said that the abundance of shrimp in Kuwaiti territorial waters attracted the ships from other Gulf countries.

Kuwaiti Naval Inspection authorities apprehended those ships with the assistance of a number of helicopters and 17 boats in addition to a research ship that also monitors Kuwaiti territorial waters.

Al Mubarak said that 2,820 tons of shrimp were caught during 1997 compared to 2,372 tons in 1996.
