Student groups condemn violence in Moroccan universities

Originally published

Two student groups condemned the violence that erupted recently in Moroccan universities. The students, members of the groups "Justice and Charity " and "Unity and Cohesion," which are part of the Moroccan National Students Union which has great influence in the Moroccan universities, requested the Moroccan government to reopen mosques which had been closed and to stop the defilement of those mosques in addition to releasing the students who had been arrested.

They also requested that the government cancel procedures adopted last year. They condemned the violence in all its aspects and forms and called on university professors to get students involved in formulating proposals for the reform of university education.

Student Islamic-oriented sources said that the rallies organized last Thursday, defending the honor of the campus and the dignity of the students were carried out in a quiet climate and that the Moroccan authorities released the 115 students who had been arrested earlier.

The General Student Union met yesterday with the Minister of University Education Idris Khalil in order to discuss the recent developments in the universities.

There have been many stories about the murdering of a Moroccan student, although the Moroccan authorities had refuted these stories. The administration of the Mohamed Bin Abdalla University in Fez stated that no death of any student had been reported, adding that student Mohamed Al Magrouzy who had been reported dead earlier is alive and participated in a press conference to refute these stories.
