Amnesty International: Terrorist actions increase in Algeria

Originally published

A report from the human rights organization Amnesty International said that violence and terrorist actions are constantly on the increase in Algeria, and up to now their victims' numbers have exceeded 80,000 since the crisis broke out in 1992.

The report calls for imposing an international campaign against Algeria to investigate the crimes that happened there.

Algerians have indicated that the report includes an implied charge about Algerian government participation in the slaughters that have recently occurred in Algeria. The Algerian government denied those charges, and have stated that it does not support abuses to human rights. Algerian chief of staff colonel Mohamed al-Amri had stated earlier that he did not rule out the existence of problems by some renegade individuals, but that there is prompt investigation of each case as these violations are few and cannot affect the reputation of the army.

The national observer of human rights in Algeria, Kamal Razan, said that the group that committed the terrorists actions is the same group that committed Luxor accident. "They are all terrorists, whether or not their actions have a political background."

He said that these actions don't serve human rights, and called for an end to these actions. Razan added that terrorism is considered the main cause of human rights violations and the right to live in peace in Algeria.
