Abdel Meguid Will Receive the Russian Foreign Minister
The secretary-general of the Arab League Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid will receive the Russian Foreign Minister Yevegeni Primakov at the League headquarters in Cairo on Thursday within Russia's attempt to revive its role in the Middle East peace process.
A responsible source in the Arab League informed ArabicNews.com that Abdel Meguid will brief the Russian official on the complete file of the Israeli violations of the Oslo Agreement and the other international resolutions in addition to Netanyahu's ruining of the peace process and his attempt to make the region live in an atmosphere of war.
The source expressed his regret for the situation which the peace process is passing through and for the Israeli provocation against the two countries with which it signed peace agreements: Egypt and Jordan. The source stressed the necessity of reviving the Russian role to be as strong as the US role which showed its complete bias toward Israel.
Primakov's tour of the region is very important to let Russia shoulder its responsibility in the Middle East crisis and its attempt to push the peace process ahead.
The source added that the Arab support to the Russian role is very clear after the peace process reached a deadlock which necessitate the intervention of the big countries.
Primakov will also meet with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa. Ambassador Mohamed Fathi said that Primakov's visit to Egypt is very important for the peace process and also to follow up the agreements reached during President Hosni Mubarak's visit to Russia. Primakov will discuss with Moussa the bilateral relations in addition to a number of issues in the Middle East like the situation in Iraq, the Libyan crisis and other issues of mutual interest.
Earlier on his Middle East visit, Primakov said that Syria has a real desire for resuming peace negotiations from the point they stopped at, and on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions, Madrid conference bases and the land-for peace principle. In a press conference he held on October 28 after talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Salam Al Majali, Primakov said his talks, with President Hafez Al Assad the Syrian president aimed at bringing view points nearer as Russia is one of the sponsors of the peace process.
He added "I discussed the peace process with Syrian president... I felt that Syria wants the peace process to be resumed from the point it stopped at and not from the zero point."
Concerning the European role, Primakov said: "We back the idea of reactivating the European role in the peace process."
