Demonstration in Khartoum

Al-Souq Al Shabi area in Khartoum witnessed wide demonstrations led by students. Demonstrators threw stones at the riot forces which used tear gas to disperse them.

Eye-witnesses said that a woman was killed during the demonstration. This demonstration is one of a series of demonstrations that started in Khartoum during last week as a protest against the conscription of students. It is expected that the demonstrations will extend to other provinces, especially after the resumption of studies in universities.

Sources said that the National Islamic Front (NIF) has mobilized its security troops to put down any demonstrations. They said that NIF staff are carrying military cards.

The sources confirmed that the visit of president Omar Bashir to Juba was for inspecting the conditions of the students and raising their morale, Al Khartoum daily said today.
