Albright may finally visit Lebanon. Admits failure
After American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright failed to reach a compromise between Israel and Palestine, she admitted to have failed in her trips to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, during a conversation she had with the former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Albright told Peres that she realized a few small positive steps, but she did not succeed in convincing Egyptian and Saudi leaders to participate in the Middle East and North Africa economic conference in Doha, where Israel will be present. Albright is also trying to make sure that countries of the Arab Gulf will attend.
The Egyptian and Saudi Presidents refused to attend the Doha conference as long as the situation between Israel and Arab countries is tense. Finally, Albright asked Arab leaders to fight against terrorism, and to take firm commitments not to encourage fundamentalists or support them by any means.
The American Secretary of State has finally said that she may visit Lebanon and discuss at the Presidential Palace in Baabda the situation in the Middle East and the evolution of the peace process with Lebanese leaders.
