Arab League rejects Israeli claims

Originally published

Arab League Secretary General, Dr. Esmat Abdel Maguid said yesterday that he was interested in the US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's statements on Aug. 6, in which she urged Israel to avoid taking unilateral steps in the occupied territories.

Maguid said he hoped the expected visit of Albright would help "defuse the explosive situation in the region and prepare for a just, durable and comprehensive peace."

Condemning violence in the Arab occupied territories, Maguid strongly rejected Israeli claims which blamed the Palestinian Authority for the terrorists attacks. "The Israeli provocative measures in Jerusalem and the occupied territories are the direct cause of these ( terrorist attacks)," he said.
