Stoning the devil Muslim ritual during Hajj
Muslims pilgrims performing the Muslim Hajj ritual in Saudi Arabia gathered towards Mona Mountain from the Muzdalefah from where they collected "al-Jamra" (stones to throw at satin) returning back to Mona to throw al"Aqaba Jamra" and slay the sheep, from where the name al-Adha (sacrifice) comes, in rememberance of Abraham's strong faith in God and willingness to sacrifice his son when God tested his faith.
Muslims that are able financially will sacrifice a single sheep, or chicken, or other animals that they will share their meat with the needy, or for remembrance.
Islamic Paths (www.islamic-paths.org) defines al-Jamra as plural of jimar "Literally, 'the pebble'. Three stopping places in the valley of Mina, each called a jamra, are visited by returning pilgrims from 'Arafa during the Pilgrimage, the Hajj. Each jamra, which has a different name from its fellows, contains a stone column with a surrounding trough to receive all the stones thrown by the pilgrims. The stones are thrown in emulation of Ibrahim, Isma'il and Hajar who were each tempted by Iblis (Satin) to disobey God's command to sacrifice Isma'il. Each drove Iblis off with stones. Variants of this tradition show just one of the above three protagonists doing all the stone throwing. The ritual lapidation at Mina is a compulsory part of the pilgrimage."
After that the pilgrims can change their clothes and wear their ordinary cloths.
Most of the pilgrims spent Monday evening in Muzdalefah where they had al-Maghreb and al-Ishaa (night) prayers together as a group.
After the end of al-Haj rituals today (Tuesday), the pilgrims stay at Mona two or three days in order to throw other "Jamras" and then they are also careful to have the last roaming around Al-Beit al-Haram as the last part of their rituals in Mecca.
From Mecca, the pilgrims leave back home or stay in Saudi Arabia to visit the tomb of prophet Muhammad or in Madina and other sites linked to the message of Islam including Auhus mountains and the tombs of the prophet's escorts in al-Baqee area and visiting al-Qublatin mosque and praying in Qubbaa mosque.
