Originally published

The UN Security Council on Monday evening strongly condemned the assassination of the Lebanese parliamentarian and media man Jubran Tweini in a car blast in one of Beirut's suburbs.

In a statement read by the British representative to the UN, Amir Jones Bary, the chairman of the UN Security Council for this month, he deplored with strongest words the "terrorist" blowing up operation in which Tweini, one of the main opposition figures of Syria, was killed.

The council considered that Tweini was a "nationalist and symbol of freedom for Lebanon and its political independence and sovereignty," renewing deep concern over the acts of political assassinatiosn and other acts of terrorism on the stability of this country.

The council also commended the decision and vows made by the Lebanese government to bring all those responsible for the assassination to justice, as well as those responsible for other acts of assassinations that took place previously, expressing readiness to positively study any request for help proposed by the Lebanese government.
