Mehlis to question more Syrian officials

Originally published

Before leaving Lebanon to New York on Saturday the UN investigator into the Hariri assassination, Detlev Mehlis, said in statements quoted by the Lebanese press that his committee is preparing to question more Syrian officials in Vienna.

He said he will ask the Syrian authorities within days to approve the interrogation of those Syrian officials.

The UN prosecutor indicated that his committee is reviewing now the testimonies given by the five Syrian officers who were interrogated in Vienna several days ago. In order to decide whether he will recommend detaining them or making another round of interrogations with them.

Mehlis described the results of the interrogation processes in Vienna as fruitful and have produced better information, than those the committee had got in its meetings with Syrian officials in Damascus, noting that his committee has reached the solution of half of the puzzle of the assassination of Lebanon's Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri and it has still to discover the other half.
