Annan rules out an American military action against Syria

Originally published

The UN secretary general Kofi Annan ruled out the US to militarily attack Syria over the UN investigation on the murder of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

In a press conference he held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday following talks with King Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz, Annan said he sees no indicator that the "USA intends plans for a military action against Syria, regardless to the result of the investigation."

Annan called on Damascus to further collaborate with the UN investigation committee which asked for interrogating 6 Syrian officials and questioning them.

Annan who is in a tour on the Middle East denied that the UN Security Council is using the assassination of al-Hariri as a pretext to create an atmosphere for invading Syria, repeating the same scenario of Iraq after it was accused of having mass destruction weapons.

On the other hand the US ambassador at the UN John Bolton doubted Syria's cooperation with the UN. He said commenting on Annan's statements that Damascus's record in implementing UN resolutions ranges between "week and very weak"'. This was in Bolton's comment on Annan's statement that Syria's record is good in the field of implementing UN Security Council resolutions.
