Originally published

The spokesman for the White House on Tuesday said that the Iraqi people will decide themselves how to punish Saddam Hussein on the crimes he had committed, hoping the trial which starts today to be completed according to " basic international standards."

The spokesman Scott McClellan explained "it is an Iraqi process. The Iraqi people will decide how to punish Saddam Hussein over the crimes against humanity and the horrible acts he had committed against the Iraqi people."

He added that the decision is for the Iraqi people through the special court which was established. The former president faces the penalty of hanging if he is convicted.
