Southern Sudanese airport to be renovated

Originally published

The World Food program announced that it had handed over one airport in Rumbik city south of Sudan to the authorities in order to facilitate the transport of humanitarian aid to the same area.

The program's deputy director Susanna Malcora said that the airport whose renovation lasted for six months is considered part of the peace gains deservedly southern Sudan got after two decades of civil war.

Meantime, the spokesman for the program Simon Kreetle said that large planes can use the airport instead of landing foodstuffs in the area by parachutes as used to happen before, and this will save huge sums and facilitate the access of this aid.

He added that the project to renovate the airport came as part of WFP's project to improve the infrastructure in Southern Sudan at a cost of USD 180 million.
